Beekeeper Marko got all the hives ready for winter last weekend. He stacked down the boxes, added entrance reducers and made sure everyone has enough honey to last until things warm up again. Only one hive had some extra honey to share with us; everyone else needs to keep their stores for food and insulation. See you ladies in the spring! Got out into the garden this afternoon; we checked out the bees and our little nigella flowers and pods. We grew these funky cuties from the seed pods that were in my bridal bouquet. There’s something really special about getting to enjoy your flowers a second time :). So many dahlias, so soon! Almost all of my dahlias are budding. Growing from seed is fun because you never know what you’re going to get! It can also sometimes be disappointing (Barney purple seems to be a dominant gene...) , but I’ve got quantity on my side this year. I’m bound to get a couple beautiful new varieties! 🤞🌸🌼🌺

When you’re beekeeping with your husband and your mom, there’s sort of an unspoken competition about queen sighting. Marko won hands down last weekend, spying 5 of our 8 Pattison queens first. I got some good photos of each though for our hive notes! 🤓

Growing dahlias in Houston is no easy feat, but I’ve been stubbornly trying every year after I fell in love with them while following along on @floretflower’s blog. I’ve been seeing improvement each year and the bees are ecstatic. Since I’m not growing for market, I’ve been growing mostly using Erin’s Bees Choice seeds instead of investing in tubers. However, ogling the pages of #discoveringdahlias has me feeling some serious tuber FOMO. Can’t wait to get the special dahlia seeds that came with the book from her rainbow patch planted, and maybe I’ll even invest in a tuber or two if I can pick :).

This was our first hive... Marko’s birthday was this week which marks our third year of beekeeping. Our first two hives were my gift to him on his 30th birthday. We took our first class from Nicole @bee2beehoney and also bought from her our first two nucs of bees. Now we have 10 hives at two locations! “Your bees are in our yard!”
As soon the neighbors find out you’re keeping bees, they’ll think that any bees they see are yours. This box-o-bees was a swarm that landed in our neighbor’s tree. We knew they weren’t ours for a number of reasons, but when the neighbors called about some lost bees we asked if they minded if we caught them. We temporarily homed them in this little nuc box while they got stronger. Eventually we installed them in a full hive and relocated them to the country apiary in Pattison. Free bees!

“Do you wear the outfit?”

This is the most common question I get when I share that we are beekeepers, and usually the asker is laughing at the thought.
💁‍♀️ We wear the outfits!

It’s different for each of the 3 beekeepers at T&C. I personally don’t gear up completely for every interaction with the ladies. If I’m opening a hive though, I almost always have at least gloves and a veil. For a hive inspection, I always wear the full bee suit.

We first added flowers to the veggie garden for the bees. The bees were mostly unimpressed but I was hooked. Flowers became my obsession. Every year we expand the cutting garden more, and I am constantly trying to find places to tuck new seeds and bulbs.

Ranunculus are short lived in the Houston heat but so worth it. They are my favorite to grow and this year’s batch will be popping up their wobbly marshmallowy blooms soon. I can hardly wait. Until then, here is spring 2020’s last gasp of ranuncs before the heat became too much for them.

(Thanks to @tincupflowerco for coming to the rescue with pre-sprouted corms when our collection didn’t make it through a rough 2020.)

We mind our own beeswax during the winter and keep

We mind our own beeswax during the winter and keep the hives closed. The bees work hard to manage their hive temperatures when it’s cold. The type of hive body shown here is called a Langstroth hive. We use this type of beehive to home almost all of our our bees.
